Rep. Fudge Votes in Favor of Raising Debt Ceiling, Denounces Political Stunt

WASHINGTON, DC— Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) made this statement after voting in favor of raising the debt ceiling:

“Instead of honestly confronting our nation’s deficit, House Republicans have engaged in a political stunt by bringing a suspension vote to the floor which they knew would fail. Voting for this bill was in the best interest of our country; it ensures that the full faith and credit of the U.S. will be preserved and was our best shot at a clean vote on raising the debt ceiling. Republicans however, chose to bring it up in a way that they knew would fail,” said Congresswoman Fudge.

Republican leaders privately assured Wall Street executives that this is a show intended to make the point to President Obama and increase their ability to negotiate extreme cuts. Business leaders, including R. Bruce Josten, executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, called this tactic a joke. The measure failed by a vote of 97-318.

“It’s important to remember that we are not raising the debt limit so there can be more spending, but, rather, to avoid default of the massive debts accrued during the Bush Administration. That’s why we are faced with this decision today. Failing to raise the debt ceiling is not the equivalent of cutting up the credit cards; it is the equivalent to defaulting on a mortgage, but the stakes include risking the full faith and credit of the U.S. The debt limit must be raised in order to cover Social Security checks, troops’ pay and other essential programs.”

“Votes like this are intended to set the stage for dangerous cuts, including the elimination of Medicare. I am not willing to stand by while Republicans continue to use a strategy of bait and switch, making the American people think they take seriously the possibility of an economic crisis should the ceiling not be raised while using it as a negotiating tactic to continue to attack programs for seniors and our most vulnerable,” said Congresswoman Fudge.
