Education and Labor

 

Mission: “Strengthening America’s Middle Class” 

Jurisdiction: Oversee education and workforce programs that affect all Americans, from early learning through secondary education, from job training through retirement. Subcommittees include:

  • Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee
  • Healthy Families and Community Subcommittee
  • Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee
  • Workforce Protection Subcommittee

 

Science and Technology

Jurisdiction:  All non-defense federal scientific research and development (R&D) at a number of federal agencies, including (either completely or in part): National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Fire Administration, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The Committee is responsible for overseeing research and development programs at all of these federal agencies.

H. R. 452 – Child Tax Credit – Would make Child Tax Credit refundable for the next 5 years. 

H.R. 253 – To direct the Election Assistance Commission to make grants to States to carry out election administration improvement plans.

H.R. 12- To amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to provide more effective remedies to victims of discrimination in the payment of wages on the basis of sex, and for other purposes.

H.R. 11- To amend title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, and to modify the operation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, to clarify that a discriminatory compensation decision or other practice that is unlawful under such Acts occurs each time compensation is paid pursuant to the discriminatory compensation decision or other practice, to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to provide more effective remedies to victims of discrimination in the payment of wages on the basis of sex, and for other purposes.

H.R. 1547 – Stephanie Tubbs Jones Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2009 – To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide for collegiate housing and infrastructure grants.

Supported Bills

Reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) – Provides health care coverage for 11 million children in families who do not qualify for Medicaid.
